ABSTRACT

A big problem in studying driving by doing experiments is that drivers may not behave as they do normally. This may be because the experimental design or apparatus forces them to behave atypically or because they want to present themselves in the best light to the experimenter. The ethical issues involved in performing real-world experiments. Because the reporting of accident statistics is so prone to bias, many researchers confine their study to reports of fatal accidents. The major difficulty with interpreting accident statistics is that we can never be certain of the underlying variables that have caused them. We may find that certain factors are strongly associated with certain types of accidents occurring, but we can never really be sure that these factors are the cause of those accidents. Doing applied research is certainly not easy.
