ABSTRACT

During the history of driving, there have been two clear trends: vehicles have steadily increased in technological sophistication, and at the same time traffic density and speeds have increased. However, based on extrapolation from present trends, the aim is to make a few suggestions about the implications of current and impending technological developments for the drivers' task in the near future. Given the increasingly large amounts of information that manufacturers intend to supply to drivers, there will need to be much more research on how best to present it safely and effectively. Digital broadcasting will enable travel information to be presented selectively to drivers. In the future, just as it does at present, understanding why people crash will involve understanding how they drive, at the perceptual, tactical and strategic levels, and it will involve finding effective ways to change drivers' attitudes about unsafe behaviors such as drunk driving and speeding.
