ABSTRACT

Learning more about how the world works enables one to relate to it so that it becomes one's friend. And the deeper the relationship, the more respect one has for it. Connecting friendship with learning about science seems to be something a girl would be more likely to do than would a boy. After all, the extensive research on gender and science addresses ways of making boys more relational because girls are allegedly more interested in relationships. For many educators and parents, it seems a stretch to think that learning about science in schools can be like getting to know a friend. Immersion is a key concept for understanding how students think about their own knowledge. The first drops of sexuality fall from a faucet they can no longer turn off just by willing it so. They dream of immersion of self in others while wanting to be independent persons in their own right.
