ABSTRACT

A strong collaboration between the school and the Ministry of Education's Educational Technology Center (ETC) laid the basis for the integration of new technologies across the curriculum. The students involved in Project Headlight at the Hennigan had a fair degree of freedom to meander around the computer pods during their daily computer time. The lines separating teachers and young people were clearly drawn, as one would expect in a traditional school. In the name of maintaining order and protecting the children from harm, playground supervisors became expert in resolving conflicts. The method most commonly used was that of singling out certain children in order to monitor a particular group's behavior. Students at the Bayside Middle School created a rudimentary website describing their study of Clayoquot Sound. Each classroom at Bayside has a door leading outside. Having these doors contributes to the feeling that the classroom is a home rather than a guarded enclosure.
