ABSTRACT
This chapter is divided into two parts. The first part is an introduction to our findings. The problem and challenge of individual differences among the children and in the communication interaction between them and their families is discussed first, hence the subtitle, “Prologue.” We discuss individual differences by giving some examples. From our point of view this is an important perspective to take on the language development of the children in our study. Although much of the time, in subsequent chapters, we discuss patterns of development across children, and behaviors across caregivers, we would like the reader to be aware of the fact that there were marked individual differences among our children and in the families in which they were growing up.
