ABSTRACT

Tuesday's Child is designed for children ages 18 to 72 months who show high rates of oppositional behavior. These children fail to follow explicit adult requests (e.g., "Pick up your toys") and implicit rules (e.g., "You may not hit other children"). Parents who come to Tuesday's Child report that their children's noncompliance is often accompanied by other externalizing behaviors, such as whining, "talking back," tantrums, overactivity, and aggression. Noncompliance is a significant clinical problem because it is widespread and because of its relation to the child's future adjustment. In naturalistic home observations of normal children, Johnson, Wahl, Martin, and Johansson (1973) found noncompliance to be more frequent than any other problem behavior. Patterns of aggression, disruption, and noncom pliance were also noted as the most common complaints of teachers and parents (Bernal, Klinnert, & Schultz, 1980; Phillips & Ray, 1980).
