ABSTRACT
Progressive Life Center, Inc. (PLC) was started in 1983 and its stated mission is to provide exemplary mental health services to African Americans util izing traditional African philosophy and culture as a framework for thera peutic and programmatic development. Central to the African philosophy and axiology is spirituality-the foundation of African culture that PLC also utilizes as a basis for its approach to healing (Akbar, 1979; Asante, 1988). The African-centered approach that was developed at PLC is known as NTU (pronounced in-to) Psychotherapy (Phillips, 1990).
