ABSTRACT

The term recurring nightmares refers to the repeated experience of the same dream, or to the repeated experience of dreams with a stereotypical theme. Cases presenting with this phenomenon were identified by question 6 of the interview schedule, to which 114 patients gave a definite answer.1 Nine of these patients reported recurring nightmares. This is an incidence of 7.9%. In addition, 17 patients reported increased frequency of nightmares in general. These were not recurring nightmares. One control patient reported the same phenomenon. The 9 patients with recurring nightmares are described briefly in the following sections. The patients with nonrecurring nightmares are dis cussed at the end of the next chapter.
