ABSTRACT
The research in any area of science falls into two broad categories: the discovery and definition of problems, and the discovery and definition of solutions. Every field has a mix of these two types of research. New areas of science tend to concentrate on the exploration of problems; established fields tend to be more heavily weighted towards solutions.
