Semicolons with Lists. Lists of more than two items that consist of long phrases or clauses are usually divided up with semicolons instead of commas:

Note that because of the length of this list, and because in the third item of the list there is yet another three-item list as well, the authors have chosen to include numerals as well as semicolons to divide the material.
