ABSTRACT
Much behavioral research centers around hypotheses that scores in one group or under one condition tend to be higher than those in another. Such questions are generieally referred to as questions of location. The most common methods of investigating these hypotheses are the traditional t test for independent groups or for correlated observations, or some form of analysis of variance. There are, however, several reasons for preferring ordinal analyses to these familiar methods.
