ABSTRACT
In statistical inference, it is often necessary to exercise some care in applying a method that sounds like it is doing what one intends because the method may be doing something a bit different. Otherwise, a concIusion may be correct statistically but inaccurate substantively, or inappropriate statistical theory may have been applied so that probability statements are inaccurate. It often seems that a combination of tradition and convenience can lead to this kind of suboptimal methodology.
