ABSTRACT
If I am right that the volatile couple is not a candidate for the dysfunctional interaction patterns that Raush et al. (1974) had in mind, what, in terms of the longitudinal stability criterion, is a dysfunctional interaction pattern? In this chapter, I suggest that the key dimension involves extremely high levels of defensiveness, and that there are two styles of highly defensive couples: engaged and detached.
