ABSTRACT

This chapter reports the results of an 8-year follow-up of the couples originally studied in 1983. The levels of divorce and separation were quite a bit higher by 1991 than they had been in 1987. Results showed that Time 1 and Time 2 data were significantly correlated with separation and divorce, in ways consistent with the theory presented in chapter 15. Also, the Weiss Marital Status Interview was administered to couples who were still married in 1991. Results showed that the MSI formed a rough Guttman scale, and that the Time 1 and Time 2 data were correlated significantly with the MSI total scores and factors. The Oral History variables that predicted divorce over 8 years in this study were generally related to the same kinds of Time 1 variables as had been reported with the DUO86 study.
