ABSTRACT

The analysis procedures presented up to now treat the categorizations as nominal. The order in which the categories are listed in the table is arbitrary, insofar as the analysis is concerned. However, many factors are intrinsically ordered. Several examples have already appeared in this book: the classification of college students by year is ordered, as are the detection responses X and Y in Chapter 6 and the three levels of drug use in Chapter 8. There is information in these orderings that can aid the analysis and strengthen the conclusions that one draws. This chapter looks at ways to accommodate the ordering of categories.
