ABSTRACT
So far, we have concentrated on what editors do. Another way to examine editing is to consider what editors are, or at least what they should be. As we have seen, editors have many jobs and play many roles. Generalizing about them can be risky. Yet it clearly seems important, both for journalists considering editing careers and for managers seeking qualified desk people, to develop some idea of what qualities make for a good editor.
