ABSTRACT
This chapter reviews anorexia nervosa and bulimia, eating disorders char acterized by excessive fear of being fat coupled with extreme efforts to control weight. These problems have received intensive study recently, and several national organizations have emerged: Anorexia Nervosa and Related Eating Disorders, American Anorexia and Bulimia Association, Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, and Overeaters Anonymous. Although this chapter is restricted to anorexia and bulimia, these syn dromes can be seen as part of a continuum of eating disorders encompass ing obesity as well. Many of the same conditions that promote one disorder are probably relevant to others. Epidemiology, medical consequences, and cognitive/affective correlates are discussed in turn.
