This chapter reviews anorexia nervosa and bulimia, eating disorders char­ acterized by excessive fear of being fat coupled with extreme efforts to control weight. These problems have received intensive study recently, and several national organizations have emerged: Anorexia Nervosa and Related Eating Disorders, American Anorexia and Bulimia Association, Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, and Overeaters Anonymous. Although this chapter is restricted to anorexia and bulimia, these syn­ dromes can be seen as part of a continuum of eating disorders encompass­ ing obesity as well. Many of the same conditions that promote one disorder are probably relevant to others. Epidemiology, medical consequences, and cognitive/affective correlates are discussed in turn.
