ABSTRACT

In this chapter, support is gathered for multiple sources of information in speech perception. After reviewing prototypical studies of the utilization of multiple auditory and contextual sources, the contribution of visible speech is considered. Classic studies with speech in noise as well as more recent demonstrations with high quality natural auditory speech find evidence for a contribution from visible speech. More recently, experiments using synthetic auditory speech provide new insights into bimodal speech perception and offer the potential of illuminating the fundamental processes and structures in perceiving speech by ear and eye. In each experimental demonstration of multiple sources of information I will evaluate the results in terms of the general model introduced in the first chapter. The goal of the chapter is to give the reader a general flavor of the present framework while simultaneously making the case for the important contribution of visible information in face-to-face speech perception.
