ABSTRACT

This chapter reveals some of the aspects of Quaker theology that were to find application in the emerging Quaker church, including the importance of a caring community, a community as the locus of healing and health, and the inspiration from God to speak God's word in a particular situation. It was Quaker theology that informed this method of care and Quaker adherents who spoke out about the injustices of traditional psychiatric care. Quaker mission to remove the roadblock of insanity so that all can have access to the good news of Christ's love. The Frankford Quakers had a clear view of insanity and its treatment. The basic principles of moral treatment were acceptance, occupation, and responsibility. Acceptance meant inclusion as a full member of the community.
