ABSTRACT

Parent coordination is a very challenging, multifaceted, yet gratifying profession designed to enhance the lives of children in two-household families. The primary avenue to achieve this goal is to improve the coparent relationship. The challenges posed by high-conflict families vary in their severity; therefore, the degree of success varies with each family. Success is also defined by the limitations and strengths of each family member, their willingness to change, as well as the influence of outside sources, including the behaviors of the PC, on the family system. While attempting to maximize parental collaboration and minimize parental conflict, the PC must maintain realistic expectations. A parent coordinator will be at risk of becoming discouraged unless he or she revises expectations based upon the needs or limitations of the family. To avoid potential burnout, a parent coordinatior must recognize that some parents will simply refuse to change.
