ABSTRACT

The history of the psychotherapy field and family therapy in particular, reads like an exciting novel, with creative twists and turns at practically every juncture. Creativity involves both the processes and products of an individual in a complex interpersonal and sociocultural context that includes reciprocal interactions of people, cultural domains, and social institutions. Creativity in therapy is also important because of the ever-increasing pressure to employ brief, short-term, solution-focused therapies due in part to restrictions posed by managed care. Counseling in its broadest sense is a process that involves the use of psychological methods in giving professional guidance and assistance to individuals, couples, families, or groups. However, Frey notes that, in the broadest sense, counseling is actually a creative enterprise within which client and counselor combines their resources to generate a new plan, develop a different outlook, formulate alternative behaviors, and begin a new life".
