ABSTRACT

Must divorce mean emotional cutoff? Our society tends to equate the two, and to promote cutoff with the attitude: “Get over this and get on with your life.” The language of divorce has the ring of finality. Terms such as “cast asunder,” “uncoupling,” “dissolution,” “irreconcilable differences,” and “going our separate ways” describe the ending of a relationship.
