This chapter explores the interlocking relationship between Bowen’s concepts of emotional cutoff and societal process. Emotional cutoff has generally been discussed as a process and a mechanism for managing anxiety in multigenerational family relationships. However, there are aspects of the concept that may also be relevant for understanding societal process and the relationships between large social units over time.
