ABSTRACT
On the evening of July 15, 1992, Mr. Joost, a man of seventy-five, went to the bathroom to remove his dentures before going to bed. When he did not return, his wife went to have a look and found him unconscious on the bathroom floor. She phoned for an ambulance and he was taken to the Randstad Hospital. It soon became clear that he was unable to breathe spontaneously, and he was put on a respirator in intensive care.
