TRICARE, the Department of Defense (DoD) managed care program initiated in 1993, is fundamentally changing the delivery of health care to beneficiaries of the Military Health System (MHS). This chapter includes a brief history of TRICARE, an overview of the uniform benefit established with TRICARE, and a summary of TRICARE structure and operations, successes and challenges. The initial effects of TRICARE implementation on the delivery of military social work services, which include medical social work, mental health, and family advocacy, are then addressed and conclusions drawn.
