ABSTRACT

The intent of this chapter is to paint an overall picture of what life in the Army is like. We begin with a general discussion of living the Army life. Then we describe some of the stresses and issues affecting the new recruit, the newly forming Army family, and unique conditions affecting dual military families. We conclude with an overview of common adjustment tasks or problems experienced by military families including risk of injury or death, frequent relocation, separation, overseas assignments, and intercultural/interracial marriages. Our hope is that the reader will gain a deeper understanding of what Army life entails. Many Army families savor the positives, survive the hardships, and blossom into resilient families within an often demanding environment. Some families, especially young families, are bombarded by stressors that overwhelm already meager personal resources. We hope to illustrate the environment that nurtures some and capsizes others. Come join us on our journey through Army territory.
