ABSTRACT

It is ironic that, although the neurobiology of drug dependency has become well defined, as have the reasons why people take drugs and why they often fail to remain abstinent when drug free, the public's general attitude toward treatment is one of extreme pessimism. As a result, despite the wide array of treatment modalities, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration estimates that only 3 million of the approximately 16 million persons in need of alcohol or drug abuse treatment are receiving it.
