ABSTRACT

As I write this chapter, a growing national debate on the issue of gay marriages is occurring. In anticipation of a decision by the State of Hawaii Supreme Court on the matter, state and national politicians are lining up to voice their opposition. The irony in much of this is the subtle way in which gay relationships are being acknowledged. Whereas antigay forces once stereotyped gay men as being uninterested in and unable to sustain long-term relationships, there very clearly is the acknowledgement of gay relationships in this debate. However, some people do not want gay couples to have the recognition and benefits afforded heterosexual couples in our society.
