ABSTRACT

The intervention described in this chapter is based on second-order cybernetic theory and the Mental Research Institute (MRI) brief therapy model. Second-order cybernetic theory (Atkinson and Heath, 1990) implies that the therapist is part of the treatment system. The therapist focuses on how he or she is contributing to the process taking place within the therapist-client system. By focusing on his or her contribution to the process, a therapist can become aware of instances in which the approach he or she is taking may need to change. A facet of a therapist's approach that may need to change is the therapeutic stance of the therapist.
