ABSTRACT
The Chinese sense of humor is broad and deep, but two subjects—posterity and filial piety—are rarely permitted to come within its bounds. For the individual to become facetious about either of these is not only ill-advised but dangerous, as I discovered from as harrowing an experience as I have ever known before or since.
