ABSTRACT

My first sight of the institution to which I had been appointed superintendent was one to be remembered. As we entered the stone gatehouse, several scrawny chickens and a pig hurried from our path. Never in my life had I seen anything like this coming from a hospital. A short stone walk led to the main building, where I found the same offensive odors as in the entrance, although the livestock was missing. Corridor walls were stained and spotted; and visitors, who seemed to be coming and going without supervision, spat on the floor at will. https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781315810461/4eab397c-1767-44f7-80e6-ab85f6baf550/content/fig16_B.tif" xmlns:xlink="https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"/>
