ABSTRACT

Machiko Hasegawa recalled her younger days in her amusing vignette The Sazae-sans on tour’, in the Asahi newspaper of 29 June 1987. Her mother used to cut her hair, believing that if Sazae-san went to a barber shop, she would become bald on account of the germs breeding on the scissors. Because of her mother’s lack of skill, Sazae-san’s hairstyle was appalling. She was mortified and cried. When her foreign friends came to say goodbye to her, she was not able to see them. Machiko herself said that she did not go to the barber until, in reaction against her mother’s foolish fancies, she tried to have her hair permed.
