ABSTRACT

The intent of this investigation was to document the formation, history and development of the theatre troupe known as Teatro Pregones, which has characterized itself as a promoter of social change in the South Bronx. Although defined as a company that does political theatre, it is evident that its artistic intention is not to deliver political propaganda, but rather to preserve and promote the cultural values of the Puerto Rican and other Latino communities on the eastern United States. While incorporating both Puerto Rican-ness and Latin-ness, Pregones has contributed to the development of a theatre that is idiosyncratically Latin American in the way it creates, produces and executes its work, carving a niche for itself within the theatrical world.
