ABSTRACT

This research project will illustrate the complex web of networks and movements among Amazonian indigenous representatives, interna tional non-governmental organization (INGO) representatives, multina tional oil companies, and international funding agencies that has been developing over the past fifteen or more years. Even though there are eth nic groups of Indians that still have not been contacted by Western indi viduals, such as Ecuador’s Tagaeri, and the majority of Amazonian Indians do not even travel to their capital cities, they have organized a system of collective action outside of their state borders that has given a voice to these once almost invisible groups. The reasons why this occurred, its processes, and its outcomes will be analyzed in this project.
