To their credit, most of the software, entertainment, and tourism executives I interviewed were a little more up front in acknowledging how their business can "get political," but their examples tended to revolve around tax rates, trade policy, intellectual property rights enforcement, worker immigration, and others that pertain to national or, at the smallest scale, state government. Several seemed dubious that local politics matters for their business at all. The question I take up in this chapter is: How and why do companies and elites in software, entertainment, and tourism seek to influence local government?
