ABSTRACT

As the children grow up, they often strive to get rid of everything that in any way is linked to the old ways and take unto themselves the traits of the new culture. They will even make efforts so that their own children will not be "contaminated" with the language and cultural traits of the culture of the old country. Yet in time, the children of this first generation, who grew up totally in the new culture, sometimes reclaim the culture of their parents in a deeper and even more radical way. In many ways, though, they already belong to the new culture. It is here that the cultural mestizaje begins to emerge.
