ABSTRACT
The way to begin understanding Latino cultures in the United States is to remember five essential points: (1) that there are a great many Latinos in the United States; (2) that there is not one, but rather, there are many Latino cultures in the United States; (3) that Latinos have lived in the territory now occupied by the United States for a long time; (4) that Latinos have often been discriminated against and victimized by Anglos; and (5) that Latinos are often seen as an American "problem," when, in fact, they are a great cultural treasure.
