In this chapter I shall start by sketching the global scene, so far as it is relevant to worldviews and philosophies. Then I shall briefly look at some particular developments, notably in the West. I have taken the story up to about the 1960s, and I do not wish to try to cover in any full way what has happened since then. It is appropriate to let the dust settle before coming to a judgment. Still, some sketches of certain trends may be helpful. Finally I want to set out my own feelings about the future directions of worldview construction and philosophy, in the light of what I have attempted in this book.
