STRUGGLING WITH THE INTERNAL TYRANT book
The next stage in my spiritual reunion with the father was not as happy or wonderful as the previous chapter might suggest. At first, the return to the father is indeed a joyous occasion, and to the son this is like a homecoming to his own spiritual self. This is especially the case to the previously mother-bound son, who has been emotionally estranged from his father-self, or paternal self-object, and who is delighted to be able to turn an Oedipal rival and foe into a personal psychological foundation. But every archetypal figure brings with it its own set of dangers and difficulties. There is no simple ‘integration’ of the father, but an ongoing struggle to maintain one’s own individual identity in the face of this potentially overwhelming archetypal figure.
