ABSTRACT

Jung was very interested in the idea of opposites, as too is Chaplin, seeing opposition as one of the driving forces in the process. The Materia Prima seems to represent our natural unreflective state of being. But the image of flooding returns: there is probably some kind of crisis which takes the client into therapy. The first thing that happens in therapy is the formation of a working relationship. The Putrefactio in alchemy is the breaking down of material, and it becomes quite disgusting in many of the accounts. The repetition of the key words in a louder voice helps to intensify the feeling as the defence recedes. A truly integrative approach would deal with all three of these areas, and in this way be able to cope with the whole person who comes into the consulting room or the group space.
