ABSTRACT

The hegemonic pattern which we met earlier requires clarity and simplification to be effective. Terry Kupers has coined the term ‘pathological arrhythmicity’ as a kind of spoof diagnostic category, which points to an important characteristic of men: too little response to natural cycles. The point of drawing atttention to this is that men pay little heed to their own bodies, and male therapists very often ignore the many cues and clues which are offered by body language. An experiential exercise offered by one men’s workshop was to get the participants to put themselves into the same poses as those adopted by the models in a popular pornographic magazine. One lesson of all this is that it is important to give up any notion of correct masculinity, as if there were just one right way of being a man.
