ABSTRACT
The student can complete the relevant forms and go back to the office with an unsuitable candidate, having worked through the problem in supervision. In response to the desire of male clients for a masculine approach, it may well be desirable to spend some time at the beginning of the relationship setting up a contract, so that both sides know what to expect. Therapists need to be very clear that long-term therapy is a life-changing process, and requires a heavy investment in time and money if it is to be anything like successful. Premature termination is particularly likely with men, because of their desire to escape from a situation which is so threatening, and for this reason the keeping of proper boundaries is very important. The therapist who tries to do without supervision is a fool, or is only pretending to be a therapist. There are some traditions which say that supervision is unnecessary, but they are wrong.
