ABSTRACT

Prolonged dependence on the therapist is a form of resistance. As soon as the therapy looks like coming to an end, a new flurry of symptoms may be brought forth. The conflict which it engenders forms a strong connection between therapist and client. Therapy is about wrestling with the angel, and sometimes this can be done by the therapist and the client joining together in the struggle. ‘Growth is always within a dialectical relationship in a dilemma which is never fully resolved.’ One of the things involved is a reclaiming of very ancient pre-Christian pagan symbols and rituals that embody more of the ‘feminine’ principle. Therapy is about wrestling with the angel, and sometimes this can be done by the therapist and the client joining together in the struggle. Each individual starts at a different point in this process and may need different styles of therapy at different times.
