ABSTRACT
We have seen the kind of situations in which a holy man will acquire friends and enemies: it is worthwhile to review how civil auth orities, in particular Roman emperors themselves, could interact with mysterious strangers who claimed to have information in their interests - or to have powers beyond their own.
