ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the nature and influences of cultural scripts and indigenisation in China's educational borrowing from the West. It examines the concepts of cultural scripts and indigenisation, as well as highlights the dominant cultural scripts for education in China. The chapter illustrates the process of indigenisation in Chinese education using the example of a hybrid teaching approach. It explores the process of indigenisation at work where the East meets the West. The Chinese educators' desire to combine student-centred' pedagogies recommended in the New Curriculum Reform (NCR) and the traditional teacher-centred pedagogies has resulted in the creation of a hybrid type of teaching approach that aims to marry both. This approach may be termed the Teacher-Directed, Student-Engaged (TSDE) approach. On the teacher-directed aspect, a number of educators have highlighted the importance of teacher guidance in student-centred learning. The five stages of self-learning for students are learn, discuss, guide, practise and assess.
