ABSTRACT

This chapter emphasizes that new doesn't always mean change and that change doesn't always mean different. Through reflection and analysis, teachers can use the tools and lessons they have as a starting point when working with the English Language Arts Common Core Standards for History/Social Studies and Science and Technical Subjects. Worksheets are like anything else in teaching profession: if they get the kids thinking, they're probably not that terrible. The final strategy for turning basic into brilliant is hands-on time. Hands-on time is giving students the time they need to create, design and construct. Giving students the opportunity to apply what they're learning doesn't have to be with pencil and paper or discussion. The Common Core Standards call for collaboration among teachers, students and the community. Unit planning is crucial to improve what teachers are already teaching and using it to implement the English Language Arts Common Core Standards for History/Social Studies or Science and Technical Standards, Grades 6-12.
