ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses not on teaching the students how to read but on teaching the students how to learn through reading. Gallagher states in Readicide that one must surround academic texts with high-interest, authentic real-world reading. As Allen states, in reading education the importance of activating and building background knowledge has long been established as critical to the reading process. Sometimes, it's ok for students to just dive right into their reading, especially if they've already been exposed to the content. In school, the majority of the magic seems to happen in the classrooms after students have completed a reading. The Common Core Standards are all about how students actually apply and demonstrate their knowledge, hopefully using practical, real-world skills. Finally, the chapter discusses how the English Language Arts Common Core Standards for History/Social Studies and Science and Technical Subjects can make differentiating a breeze.
