ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book discusses the balancing content and literacy in a Common Core classroom, how professional development and professional organizations can be beneficial and, finally, walking on the own and how things do get easier. Teaching the Common Core in the content areas will be a big change for some educators and a simple change for others. According to Schmoker, one need three basic strategies: Adequate amounts of essential subject-area content, concepts and topics; intellectual/thinking skills; and authentic literacy, purposeful reading, writing, and discussion as the primary modes of learning both content and thinking skills. As teachers, they will always have to attend meetings that make people feel as though they had rather be having a root canal. It happens. Luckily, as teachers, they have the opportunity to pick much of the own professional development.
