ABSTRACT
After presenting a sociological framework for understanding schooling, this chapter examines how we can understand social justice in education, in preparation for the following chapters. Social justice in education has two elements: who gets how much of schooling (distributive justice), and how the content of schooling may advance the interests of some social groups (the politics of difference). This then reviews existing studies on Japanese schooling and locates the significance of this monograph.
