ABSTRACT
India is the predominant power in South Asia, where it claims special rights and responsibilities in managing regional security. This chapter will focus on India's strategic role in maritime South Asia, especially its security relationships with the island states of Sri Lanka and the Maldives. India's experiences in maritime South Asia illuminate the strategic approaches and policies that may be used elsewhere in the Indian Ocean.
